4 Must-Haves For Your 1st Trimester (and 2 Things You Can Skip) | South Florida Newborn Photos + Videos
1. A Pregnancy Journal
Starting a pregnancy journal early is one of the best decisions you can make!
Sure, it’s great for jotting down cravings and sweet moments, but it’s so much more than that. It helps you track symptoms (because pregnancy brain is real), monitor emotional shifts, and even note early baby movements. Plus, these little snapshots of your journey will be priceless to look back on later.
When I was pregnant, I spent just five minutes a day writing in my journal. One day, I realized how much clarity it gave me. Not just for doctor’s visits but for appreciating all the little milestones I might’ve otherwise overlooked.

2. Anti-Nausea Products
Morning sickness (or all-day sickness) can hit hard between weeks 6 and 14. If you’re feeling queasy, anti-nausea products can be lifesavers.
Ginger candies are a classic go-to, but magnesium supplements or acupressure wristbands like Sea-Bands can also work wonders. If scents help, try sniffing peppermint or lemon essential oils for quick relief.
One of my clients said she couldn’t function without her Sea-Bands and ginger chews, and they were her first-trimester survival kit! You may try these if are struggling with sickness.
3. Plan Your Weekly Bump Photos
Start your weekly bump photos early. It’s such a fun way to document your pregnancy journey!
Even if your bump isn’t showing yet, capturing those early weeks will be something you’ll treasure. Choose a spot with good lighting, wear the same outfit for consistency, and use a tripod or timer mode on your phone for easy self-portraits.
A fun idea is using a fruit to represent your baby’s size each week (just be sure to have that fruit ready!).
When I started taking bump photos, I didn’t think my belly was changing until I looked back. It was so heartwarming to see my little one’s growth week by week.
Pro Tip: Tie your bump photo routine to something you already do weekly, like after Monday breakfast or after your Saturday farmers’ market run, to stay consistent.
4. A Newborn, Maternity, or Birth Photographer
It’s never too early to book your photographer and videographer! The best newborn, maternity, and birth photographers and videgraphers often book months in advance, so securing your spot during your first trimester is a smart move.
At this point, my calendar for newborn sessions fills up about six months ahead, so I always encourage clients to plan early. This gives you time to find the perfect fit and ensures you won’t miss out on capturing your family’s memories.

What You Can Skip in the First Trimester
Not every suggestion is a must-have. Here are a couple of things I think you can safely skip:
Stretch Mark Cream: Research shows stretch marks are mostly genetic, so don’t stress about pricey creams. Use a lotion you already have to keep your skin hydrated instead.
Maternity Clothes: You likely won’t need these until late in the second trimester. For now, make your current wardrobe work with belly bands or flowy dresses.
Final Thoughts
Your first trimester is a time of adjustment, excitement, and learning what works best for you. By focusing on a few key essentials like a journal, anti-nausea products, and planning for photos, you can make this time more comfortable and meaningful.
Remember, you don’t need everything all at once. Choose what feels right, and don’t forget to enjoy this incredible journey!
