The 2 Pregnancy Photoshoots Every South Florida Mom Should Consider: Pregnancy Announcement vs. Maternity Photos

When you think about pregnancy photos, you probably picture those dreamy, glowing maternity portraits: flowy dresses, golden light, and that beautiful baby bump. But did you know there’s another type of session that captures an entirely different (and equally special!) part of your journey?

When you’re expecting, it feels like there are so many things to plan: doctor’s visits, baby showers, nursery setups—but one thing you won’t want to overlook? Capturing this once-in-a-lifetime journey with photos!

But here’s something many moms in South Florida don’t realize: pregnancy announcement and maternity photos are completely different, and both serve a unique purpose.

So how do you know which one you need (or if you should do both)? Let’s break it down!

In this post, I’ll walk you through:
✨ What makes each session unique (and why they feel so different!)
📆 The best time to book so you don’t miss your chance
🤔 How to decide if you need both—or just one that fits your style and budget

Your pregnancy will fly by faster than you think, and I want to make sure you don’t look back wishing you had more photos of this incredible season. Let’s dive in and find the perfect way to capture your journey!

Pregnancy Announcement vs. Maternity Photos: What’s the Difference?

Both types of sessions celebrate your baby, but they capture very different moments.

Pregnancy Announcement Photos (8-14 Weeks)

These sessions happen early in your pregnancy and are all about sharing your exciting news with the world!

✨ The Vibe: Fun, lighthearted, and creative
✨ What’s Included: Props like ultrasound photos, tiny baby shoes, or a letterboard with your due date
✨ How They’re Used: Social media announcements, baby books, or a cute print for the nursery

Many couples choose a fun theme like a seasonal setup (“Our Little Pumpkin Coming This Fall 🎃”) or a surprise reveal (throwing confetti or big siblings holding an “Only Child Expiring” sign).

Maternity Photos (28-34 Weeks)

These sessions happen later in pregnancy and have a completely different feel. Instead of making a big announcement, maternity photos capture the strength, beauty, and emotions of carrying life.

✨ The Vibe: Timeless, artistic, and deeply personal
✨ What’s Included: Gorgeous dresses, stunning backdrops, and meaningful moments with your bump
✨ How They’re Used: Printed keepsakes, albums, wall art, and treasured family heirlooms

In short? Pregnancy announcement photos are more “for the world,” while maternity photos are for you.

When to Book Each Session

Pregnancy Announcement Photos (8-14 Weeks)

Your session should happen at least a few weeks before you plan to share your news. If you’re announcing at 12 weeks, book your session by week 8 or 9 to give yourself time for editing and posting.

Maternity Photos (28-34 Weeks)

Your bump will be beautifully round, but you’ll (hopefully) still feel comfortable enough to enjoy your session! Waiting too long can mean feeling swollen or even risking baby’s early arrival before your photos are taken.

Pro Tip: Many photographers (myself included!) offer bundle packages, so you can book multiple sessions together, just like hiring a wedding photographer for engagement + wedding photos.

Should You Book One or Both?

Still unsure which session is right for you? Here’s how to decide:

✔️ Book Both If: You want to capture every stage: the thrill of announcing your pregnancy and the beauty of your bump. If you love looking back on milestones, you’ll be so glad you have both!

✔️ Prioritize Maternity Photos If: You’re only choosing one session and want something timeless. These images are artistic, emotional, and meant to last a lifetime. Perfect for albums, wall art, and keepsakes.

✔️ Prioritize a Pregnancy Announcement If: Sharing the excitement with friends and family is your top priority. If you’re unsure about doing a full maternity session, this is a fun, creative way to document your pregnancy early on.

One thing I always hear from moms? “I wish I had taken more pictures while I was pregnant.”

No matter which session you choose, you’ll never regret documenting this special season. But you might regret skipping it.
